Right above the harbour

The bay fills the living room window. Not a partial view, not a side angle — the whole thing.

Wood burner

First basket of logs is on us. Very welcome in February.

The Harbour House sits on the steep lane behind Smeatons Pier, where the buildings lean into each other and the gulls have opinions. It was a pilchard loft once. The beams are still there, sanded pale, and the window they used to winch barrels through is now the reason you will not get much reading done.

Three bedrooms across two floors. The top one has the best view and the steepest stairs, which feels like a fair trade. Downstairs the kitchen runs the length of the building, with a table that seats eight if everyone is friendly.

Porthmeor beach is a seven minute walk. The Tate is five. In the evening the harbour empties out and the whole place goes quiet in a way that surprises people who have only seen St Ives in August.

The window is not an exaggeration. We ate every meal at that table watching the boats come in and barely made it to the beach on the first day. Steep stairs to the top room but worth it — that is the one to fight over.

Third time here. The keysafe code arrived at 8am, the wood burner was laid ready, and someone had left a tide timetable on the counter. Small thing, used it every day.

Parked at Barnoon as instructed and never touched the car again. Walked everywhere. The lane is genuinely narrow so take that advice seriously.

Excellent house, honestly described. Only note is that the top bedroom gets warm in the afternoon sun — we left the skylight cracked and it was fine.

Susannah

We came out of season and had the harbour to ourselves in the evenings. The house is warm, which matters in April in Cornwall. Everything worked.

Asked three questions before booking and got three straight answers within the hour. That is why we booked direct and it carried through the whole stay.

Where you will be

St Ives, Cornwall, United Kingdom

Downalong is the old fishing quarter — granite cottages, lanes too narrow for cars, and washing lines strung between windows. Porthmeor with its surf school is seven minutes over the hill; Porthgwidden, the small sheltered one, is four. The Tate sits above Porthmeor and is worth an afternoon even if galleries are not usually your thing.

Getting around

Leave the car in the Barnoon long stay and walk down — the lanes near the house are not passable in anything wider than a Fiesta. A parking permit for Barnoon is included. St Erth is the mainline station, twelve minutes away on the branch line, and that little train along the estuary is genuinely one of the best rail journeys in the country.

We give the neighbourhood, not the door number. You will get the exact address once your stay is confirmed.
