Eight of us, four days, not one argument about wet boots — the boot room solved a problem I did not know could be solved. Came back off Fairfield, hung everything up, walked into a warm house.

Fells from the bed
Gable-end glazing that turns the whole valley into the main event.
A boot room that works
Drying rack, slate floor, door straight onto the path. Wet gear never enters the house.
Genuinely dog friendly
Not tolerated — welcome. Towels and a bowl are already here.
The barn sits on the hillside above Ambleside with Wansfell rising behind it and Windermere flashing through the trees below. It was converted properly — thick walls, underfloor heating, and glazing at the gable end that turns the whole valley into the main event.
Four bedrooms, sleeping eight. Two bathrooms plus the boot room, which has a drying rack, a slate floor and a door straight out to the path, so wet gear never makes it into the house. Anyone who has shared a cottage with four walkers will understand why this matters.
The village is a fifteen minute walk downhill and a twenty five minute walk back up. Fairfield Horseshoe starts more or less at the gate.

The gable window is the whole point. Sat there with coffee at half six watching the light come down the valley. Underfloor heating throughout was unexpected and very welcome.

Brought two dogs and they were genuinely welcome — bowls and towels already there. Path from the gate goes straight up onto the fell.

Kitchen is properly equipped for cooking for eight, which is rarer than it should be. Good knives. Enough pans. A dishwasher that actually finishes in under three hours.

Superb barn. The walk back up from the village is a real walk — we started taking the bus up after day two and felt no shame about it.

Booked at short notice for a February weekend. Snow on the tops, fire lit, nowhere better. Heating was already on when we arrived.

Ambleside, Cumbria, United Kingdom
The barn sits on the hillside above Ambleside with Wansfell rising behind and Windermere flashing through the trees below. Fairfield Horseshoe starts effectively at the gate. The village has a good butcher, a better bakery, and three pubs that all claim to be the oldest.
Getting around
Fifteen minutes downhill into Ambleside and twenty-five back up, which sounds worse than it is. Parking for three cars on the property. The 555 bus runs to Windermere station every half hour from the village.
We give the neighbourhood, not the door number. You will get the exact address once your stay is confirmed.
